Sights in Pau
The historic old town of Pau is dominated first and foremost by the extremely imposing and majestic medieval Pau Castle, which was also the birthplace of Henry IV in 1553. His likeness still adorns almost all the walls of the stately building. Interestingly, a palisade of poles, which are called ?Pau? in the regional dialect, surrounds the castle and thus refers to the river and the city. It now houses a museum, with works from the era of Henry IV
Pau is also ahead of the game in sporting terms. Whereas Formula 1 races were held here until 1963, Formula 2 and Formula 3 drivers now curve between the residential buildings on Pau’s street circuit there. The town is also an integral part of the Tour de France. The cycling circus has stopped here 60 times in the course of its history. This puts the city in third place behind Bordeaux and Paris. For golfers, Pau has also been a household name for more than 100 years. After all, the first golf club in Europe was founded in nearby Bill?re in 1856.
